Our Guiding Light

Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendranath Datta was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness and bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion.

Our Inspiration

Ajit Pejawar, a long term resident of Rothe, established a Yoga Seva Kendra in the village in 1993 which has become a vibrant social-cultural center for young men, women and children. A free medical center was added to the Kendra in 1995 for the benefit of the poor in the area. It is supported by 6 experienced doctors from Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar who volunteer their time on a weekly basis. The idea of a primary school in Rothe came up in discussions between Ajit Pejawar and Monish Mahurkar, ex-colleagues at Citibank Mumbai in the 1980s. G. Ramachandran, another ex-colleague and friend offered his support to the initiative.

The Launch

How we were brought to life

Keen to pursue the idea of a primary school for the children of Rothe Village, Monish and Padmini Mahurkar donated a plot of land they owned there. Fully supportive of the idea, G. Ramachandran and Priya Ramachandran helped raise significant financial support which led to the construction of a small 370 sq ft structure on the land in early 2011. The school’s pre-primary section was launched on 15 June 2011 with 30 children enrolled and commencement of Nursery and KG classes. Currently we have 149 students enrolled comprising of 89 boys and 60 girls for the academic year 2014-2015.
